Scarecrow Kennel
Exceptional German Shorthaired Pointers

About Our Kennel
Scarecrow Kennel is a small, home-based kennel, periodically producing litters of high quality German Shorthaired Pointers. Our association with versatile hunting dogs began in 1970, when Craig brought home a farm-bred, liver-ticked  shorthair pup on his fifteenth birthday. Gretchen was Craig's constant companion throughout high school, chasing wild pheasants and jump-shooting ducks in southeastern Pennsylvania. Their hunts together lit a lifelong passion for training and hunting versatile dogs, and influenced his selecting wildlife management as a profession. As years passed, those rough and tumble hunts were followed by more polished performances from a string of shorthairs as Craig gained experience in training. He began to search for a line of stylish, hard-hunting gundogs that also possessed calm in-home dispositions. He joined the North American Versatile Hunting Dog Association in 1994, became involved in Maine's Yankee Chapter, and helped charter the Sebasticook Chapter. When he moved to Utah, he joined the Wasatch Mountain Chapter. After years of training and hunting German shorthairs, he found an exceptional dog that met his standards for breeding. He established Scarecrow Kennel in 2005 with his wife Jana, who's 15-year career as a zookeeper provides a wealth of knowledge in caring for puppies. They rely upon their daughter Amanda, a practicing veterinarian, for medical advice.

Scarecrow's foundation bitch, VC Sharp Shooters Megun v. Lacy, is a product of the breeding programs of two phenomenally successful kennels in Wisconsin: Sharp Shooter's Kennel (owned by Clyde and Marilyn Vetter in New Richmond), and Briemoor Kennel (owned by Jean Strandlund in Rice Lake). Both kennels selectively bred some of the finest American and German bloodlines and developed pedigrees that share many outstanding dogs. The results are undeniable - Sharp Shooter and Briemoor dogs consistently perform well in both NAHVDA and AKC testing programs. Most of the last few generations are multi-titled as Utility dogs, Versatile Champions and Master Hunters.

From this solid background, we started a linebreeding program to produce early-maturing, biddable dogs that develop into dependable hunting companions and leading test prospects. Scarecrow dogs will get the job done under the demanding conditions experienced by today's hunters. Our dogs excel in a wide range of upland habitats, from the dry deserts of the West to the vast grasslands of the Heartland and New England's dense forests, and they love the marsh. They have ground speed; they handle birds with style and they are strong retrievers. And while Scarecrow Shorthairs are formidable hunters, they thrive in the home, where their zest for life is contagious!
